What Jewelers MUST know about Moissanite

Around 1900, French scientist Henri Moissan (mwah-SAHN) identified a new mineral from a meteorite that fell about 50,000 years ago in what is now the desert of northern Arizona. That mineral was later named moissanite in his honor. (The American pronunciation is MOYSS-uh-nite.)

Although the natural form of moissanite is extremely rare, the man-made version – known as silicon carbide – has become one of the world’s most important abrasives. Most silicon carbide consists of tiny particles, but in the 1980s researchers found ways to grow large crystals for high-performance electronics equipment. While those early crystals were green, further refinements in the 1990s produced near-colorless material. This had the beauty and durability to qualify it as a remarkable new laboratory-created gem. Since then, moissanite jewelry (moissanite rings, moissanite stud earrings and moissanite engagement rings) has become a popular category in many jewelry and department stores.

Diamonds, Cubic Zirconia and Moissanite: How They Differ

Diamonds are known for their sparkle and brilliance making them popular in jewelry as their shine is unmatched by any other gemstone. Symbolizing eternal love, diamonds are popular in engagement rings and wedding jewelry. Because of their hardness, diamonds are also used to cut and wear away other substances and are used for industrial purposes in drills, saws and engraving tools.

Diamond vs Moissanite

this article was written to answer many of the most frequently asked questions on this topic. I hope you find this information helpful.

Whether to choose a diamond or a moissanite is actually a matter of choice. Moissanite is gorgeous, eye-catching jewelry and is budget-friendly. It does, however, represent a far less valuable financial investment, meaning the market and resale value is lower. It really depends on what the purchase is for.

Synthetic Diamonds: Chagrinned When Jewelers Scoff At Fabulous Fake Diamonds

New synthetic diamonds are so close to mined diamonds that the naked eye cannot tell the difference, often saving consumers enough money to make a down-payment on a new home or buy a car. Unfounded diamond jeweler pretentiousness, snootiness, and arrogance has gone too far!

What in the World Is Moissanite?

I’ve heard of moissanite, what is it?
